Pinker argues that humans are born with an innate capacity for language. Scientists look at descriptive rules which explore how people actually talk. The Language Instinct: How the Mind Creates Language is a 1994 book by Steven Pinker, written for a general audience. Rules are prescriptive rules which mean that they prescribe how someone should talk. ![]() Pinker delves into the difference between "grammatical" and "ungrammatical." There is a contradiction with the fact that "rule," "grammatical" and "ungrammatical" have different definitions for the scientist and the layperson. If we do not respect the language it will continue to decay. Language is degenerating as society embraces the patois of surfers and jocks who believe that one word ("awesome") is a sentence. When it comes to human language, many people think that such things are cause for alarm. Pinker wonders how it is possible for people to say that the humpback whale's song contains errors or that dolphins do not swim properly. I did find the world interesting, but we lacked so much information in the beginning of the novel that it was hard to fully enjoy that aspect. The world building was vague, the plot meandering, and the characters were fairly simple and the relationships were straightforward and not very compelling. The first half of this book felt a little weak. My opinion of this book ranges wildly depending on which part of the book we’re talking about. If the book wasn’t so heavily focused on this triangle, I wouldn’t mind so much, but it was a big part of the plot and character motivations. ![]() He was definitely easier to see as a love interest, but he didn’t get enough time with Abriella to make him compare to Sebastian. And I tried! But his chemistry with Abriella felt lacking and I felt like I was forcing myself to like them together. I honestly couldn’t get behind him as a love interest. In this case, it’s somewhere in between.įirst, we have Sebastian. This is something that can either go very well or very poorly for me. There is a love triangle, and it does play a major aspect of this book. These Hollow Vows was pitched as The Cruel Prince meets A Court of Thorns and Roses, but instead, I felt the plot was more like a combination of The Cruel Prince and The Selection. ![]() |
